Is Greek life really like it’s portrayed in the movies?
The answer to that question is a resounding NO! Most of the stereotypes about fraternity and sorority members are myths. Our organization is not elitist, and welcome women from all walks of life into our group.
Joining Nu Sigma Pi will allow you to form lifelong friendships, enhance your university experience, built a networking circle, hold leadership positions and much more! You will have a support system and a whole community to lean on. This is what Greek life really is.
Can I rush if I am not in first year?
Absolutely! Many of our sisters joined later in their academic career so we encourage all undergraduate women, regardless of year of study, who are interested in Greek life to join us during rush.
Are only University of Ottawa students allowed to join?
No, we accept students from the University of Ottawa, Carleton University, La Cité Collégiale, and Algonquin College.
How can I stay in the loop on rush events?
Our Rush Facebook group is kept up to date with the details (date, time, location, etc.) of all events during our rush period. There is no fee for rush however some of our events may have costs associated with them which you will be made aware of prior to the event as well. We encourage you to join the "Nu Sigma Pi Fall Rush 2024" group to stay informed on all our rush events.
Does being in a sorority take up a lot of time?
Our sisters generally contribute 2-6 hours a week to Sorority life. Just like for any club or extra curricular activity, how much you get out of an experience is directly related to how much you put into it. This is true of the Greek experience as well! Greek time is time well spent as you will be performing community service projects, participating in awareness seminars, learning valuable time management skills, and spending time with your sisters.
Is joining a sorority expensive?
Nu Sigma Pi has one of the LOWEST DUES on campus as we are all students. Since we are a local organization, you get to see first hand where your money goes. Your dues include the cost of your sorority pin and tickets to our annual formal, and will help fund activities throughout the year. A breakdown of the budget is explained and made accessible to sisters by our Treasurer. A variety of payment plans are also available to all members.
Is there a GPA requirement to rush, pledge or join?
While we encourage academic excellence and partake in various academic events, there is no GPA requirement to be a member.
If I join a sorority, will I be hazed?
No. Not only is hazing frowned upon by our organization, the Greek community and all universities, it is also illegal in Canada. Greek Life is a wonderful experience for University women of all ages. Any undergraduate women who are interested in Greek life are encouraged to participate in the Recruitment process.
What is a legacy? Am I guaranteed a bid if I am one?
A legacy is a sister, daughter, or granddaughter of an initiated member of a sorority. While each sorority has different policies on legacies Nu Sigma Pi does not guarantee anyone a bid. Ultimately, it is the individual potential new member’s personality and character that are the main determining factors for membership selection.
